Hello all,
I came across this article - law enforcement officers may now follow students as they are going home from school to check on their "real" address. Some concerned parents, specially minorities, use different addresses when enrolling their children in better schools outside their neighborhood. Some are convicted for that. Please do read the article and I believe it is very relevant to us.
The Latest Crime: Sending Your Children to A Better School
Have a great weekend!

I've heard of parents using a relative's address to get their kids into better schools, but I've never heard of parents being arrested and brought up on felony charges for it! I suppose a concern would be over crowding of the "better" schools, but I don't feel locking someone up for attempting to educate his/her children is appropriate at all. Can one truly "steal" an education?
ReplyDeleteI would think the school board would see the problem of parents giving false addresses as their means of protesting zoning and the quality of education. I grew up in an area where zoning and quality issues came up every two to three years like clockwork. Overcrowding, quality of education, and availability of resources were always the issues and the school board did its job to make sure parents concerns were heard and decisions were made that (generally) benefited the students.
What's wrong for parents to get better learning environment? This scenerio actually happened in my home country, Malaysia too. As a parent of two, I will do the same thing for my daughter.
